The first Mitsubishi-UE engine completed is the “7UEC45LA” with cylinder bore of 450 millimeters (mm), featuring a power output of 6,230 kW (8,400 bhp) at 158 rpm (revolutions per minute). The unit will be installed as the main engine on a 22,500 DWT (deadweight ton) bulk carrier of VINASHIN Petroleum Investment and Transport Joint Stock Company (SHINPETROL) under construction at the shipyard of Bach Dang Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, a leading member of the VINASHIN Group.

The UE engine unit also marks the first low-speed marine diesel engine manufactured in Vietnam. In view of the Vietnamese government’s current focus on advancement of shipbuilding and related industries, completion of the domestically made marine engine is a significant event for Vietnam to demonstrate the country’s technological advancement to foreign countries as well as the home market. Under license from MHI, VINASHIN is to manufacture, sell and provide after-sale services for low-speed marine diesel engine models with a wide range of power outputs: Mitsubishi UEC-LA, LS, LSII and LSE engines with cylinder bores ranging from 330 to 850 mm.

VINASHIN is a state-owned corporation, established in 1996, engaging in shipbuilding and production of ship-related machinery. The company has about 50 subsidiaries, including financially independent major shipbuilding companies. VINASHIN concluded the licensing agreement with MHI in 2005.

Besides VINASHIN, MHI has licensed its Mitsubishi-UE engine technology to three Chinese companies: Qingdao Qiyao Wärtsilä MHI Linshan Marine Diesel Company Ltd. (QMD); Yichang Marine Diesel Engine Plant (YMD), a group company of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC); and Zhejiang Yungpu Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd. (YUNGPU) in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province.

Since the introduction of a market economy under the “Doi Moi” policy adopted in 1986, the Vietnamese economy has marked nearly steady development. Since 2000 it has sustained growth in the range of 6 to 8% every year and direct investments from overseas have increased robustly, as illustrated by 214.9% growth in 2008 over the previous year, luring more than USD64 billion. Against this backdrop, the Vietnamese shipbuilding industry shows signs of rapid growth. By strengthening its relationship with VINASHIN, MHI aims to increase its UE engines’ share in the global market.

As the Saudi population and its ratio of young people increase, nationwide measures to strengthen the education system are being put in place. The aim of this seminar is to contribute to such measures. This program is part of the integration and global promotion of Hitachi’s social contribution and CSR activities during 2010, the 100th anniversary of the company’s foundation.

Outline of Educational Seminar “Japan’s Experience as a Benchmark”

In this seminar, education related people from schools, universities, educational organizations and government agencies will be invited to Radisson Blu Hotel in Riyadh to hear keynote speeches and around table talk given by Japanese experts . Specifically, the example of Japan’s post war education, including how Japan adopted western scientific technology and thinking into its conventional culture, will be introduced. The contribution such education has made to Japan’s high economic growth and reconstruction will also be mentioned.

Hitachi aims to contribute to the enhancement of Saudi education through this seminar and the “Hitachi-Saudi Arabia Educational Program”.

In October 2009, Hitachi established a Riyadh branch as its Saudi Arabian base, and was the only Japanese company to take part in the International Exhibition for Higher Education held from January 26 to 29, 2010 in Riyadh. The “Hitachi Future Classroom”, which demonstrated advanced ICT* equipment such as electronic boards and digital pens, was very well received at the exhibition.

Also, in September this year, Hitachi will implement a social contribution program in Saudi Arabia called the “Hitachi-Saudi Arabia Educational Program”. Six teachers and other education related people from Saudi Arabia will be invited to stay in Japan for about one week, during which time they will be introduced to the unique class curriculums. Hitachi will continue to follow up and support the participants after their return to Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia is also planning a variety of educational projects for the future such as public school reform, and Hitachi hopes to contribute to the enhancement of Saudi education through the proposal of educational solutions utilizing its social contribution programs and advanced ICT equipment.

The engines licensed to YUNGPU are the UEC37LSII and UEC33LSII, small-size marine diesels with cylinder bores of 370 and 330 millimeters (mm), respectively. Under the licensing agreement YUNGPU can manufacture, sell and provide after-sale services for engines in China.

YUNGPU was established in 2008 in Ningbo, Zhejiang, to manufacture and market low-speed marine engines. The company is currently constructing a plant with an annual production capacity of 120 engines, approximately 1,000,000 horsepower in total, slated for completion in this summer. Once production gets under way, the number of employees will be increased to 550.

Conventionally medium-speed diesel engines have often been used as the main engines of 5,000 to 20,000 deadweight tonnage class bulk carriers. YUNGPU targets manufacturing and marketing fuel-efficient, easy-to-maintain low-speed engines for this category, and this was its incentive behind asking MHI to license its technology.

Mitsubishi-UE is one of three major brands in the global market for marine diesel engines, along with MAN and Wärtsilä. UE engines feature compact size, outstanding operating efficiency and environmental compatibility, such as low-fuel consumption and fewer cylinder lubrication oil rquirement. They are available in a wide range of models to accommodate diverse power output needs.

MHI has previously licensed UE engine technology to two other Chinese companies: large-size UE engines to Qingdao Qiyao Wärtsilä MHI Linshan Marine Diesel Company Ltd. (QMD)*1 and small-and medium size engines to Yichang Marine Diesel Engine Plant (YMD)*2. With the addition of the new licensing arrangement for small-size UE engines, a dynamic structure will now be established offering a broad range of UE engines to the Chinese market. Boosted by this development, MHI looks to pursue further penetration of its Mitsubishi-UE brand into the global market.

As an affiliate of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (China) Co., Ltd. (MHIC), the regional headquarters established in Beijing last December to oversee MHI’s business in China, the new rubber tire machinery manufacturing company, which is capitalized at 450 million yen, will conduct business by securing funds from MHIC. MHI acquired a plant building with a 5,000 square meter floor space within the Changshu Southeast Economic Development Zone and has been preparing for production launch since last August, including installation of production equipment. The new company will start operations with 64 employees. Minoru Kimura of the Rubber & Tire Machinery Department, Industrial Machinery Business, Technology & Solutions Division at MHI’s Machinery & Steel Structures Headquarters has been appointed General Manager.

While, initially the Chinese plant will perform manufacturing and assembly using major parts received from MHI’s Industrial Machinery Business, Technology & Solutions Division in Hiroshima, the company intends to further enhance and solidify its operation base in China by establishing a supply chain through development and cultivation of local suppliers. Plans call for manufacture of 40 units in the initial business year, increasing to about 160 units within three years. In tandem with this initiative, the production base in Japan - the Industrial Machinery Business, Technology & Solutions Division - will strengthen its function as a technology development center; it will also shift production to machines for use by domestic customers, including high-end models and machines to produce tires for heavy-duty construction vehicles.

Automobile production in China reached 8.89 million units in 2007, 9.35 million in 2008, and exceeded 13.5 million in 2009. This year, production is expected to expand to about 14 million units. Along with this rapid growth, demand for tires has also increased sharply. China’s tire market is expected to be the world’s largest this year, surpassing the US.

As demand for high-performance tires is also rising in China, taking opportunity of the production base establishment, MHI intends to further strengthen its vigorous business development activities of tire machinery, including advanced tire-curing machines to produce high-performance tires.

Established in 1993, KCEC commenced the production of Komatsu and Cummins-developed small diesel engines in 1995. KCEC has since produced Quality-and-Reliability-featured diesel engines by capitalizing on the Komatsu Group’s advanced manufacturing technology accumulated over the years. These engines have been mounted on Komatsu hydraulic excavators and other construction equipment while supplied worldwide by Cummins.

KCEC is planning to embark on the commercial production of Tier 4-certified diesel engines for use in construction equipment. The Boundary Dam Integrated Carbon Capture and Sequestration Demonstration Project will transform the aging Unit 3 at Boundary Dam Power Station near Estevan into a reliable, long-term producer of clean baseload electricity, while enhancing provincial oil production and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The project is also good for the Saskatchewan economy – it will result in capital investment, increased royalty revenues from coal and petroleum production and innovative employment opportunities by extending the life of the coal-fired generating unit for another 30 years.

In 2009 SaskPower invited vendors from around the world to participate in a two-stage procurement process. The first stage was used to identify the most promising proposals, with more detailed proposals developed during the second stage. Hitachi Canada was selected following the evaluation process.

“This is an important development for SaskPower and the entire industry because it is expected to be the first steam turbine in the world designed to fully integrate a coal-fired power plant with carbon capture,” said Mike Monea, vice-president, Integrated Carbon Capture and Sequestration, SaskPower. “It is also another important step as we develop our business case for this project.”

“Innovative partnerships between utilities and technology suppliers are critical to the successful commercialization of low carbon energy options. Based on our forty plus year relationship Hitachi can think of no better partner in this regard than SaskPower,” said Howard Shearer, CEO of Hitachi Canada. “The Boundary Dam Project and the longer term strategic alliance formed under the recently signed collaboration agreement will allow us to jointly develop and deliver the next wave of clean energy technologies to the people of Saskatchewan and beyond.”

The bond between SaskPower and Hitachi was strengthened earlier this month with the signing of a collaboration agreement on low-carbon energy projects during Minister Boyd’s government investment mission to China and Japan. “The steam turbine supply for carbon capture at Boundary Dam demonstrates Hitachi’s contribution to the low-carbon society and builds on the spirit of the collaboration agreement,” said Hitoshi Isa, Vice President and Executive Officer, Chief Executive Officer of Thermal Power Systems, Power Systems Company, Hitachi. “SaskPower and Hitachi will enhance further their long relationship by working together in the field of low-carbon technology.”

That agreement will promote cooperation to shorten the path from demonstration project, called Saskatchewan Reference Facility for CCS, which expects funding from Saskatchewan province and federal government, to commercially viable operation, and ensure the development of new technology at a lower cost.
