Saturday, April 24th, 2010

Caterpillar Work Tools B.V., the leading provider of excavator and wheel loader attachments will showcase at BAUMA 2010 an impressive line of products in conjunction with the German Caterpillar dealer Zeppelin. Caterpillar work tools are designed to function as an integral part of the machine and to provide the best possible performance in a particular application. All work tools are performance-matched to Cat machines.

“Bauma is an excellent platform to showcase Caterpillar’s capabilities and leadership in designing excavator and wheel loader attachments that will enable our customers to operate more effectively and efficiently. We are delighted that some of our leading products will be present,” said David Becktel, Commercial Manager Caterpillar Work Tools.

New P200 series Hydraulic Concrete Pulveriser
The P200 series is an excellent choice for all those recyclers who need to prepare concrete for fine crushing and is an excellent attachment for secondary demolition. Concrete chunks released during the demolition of concrete structures can be fine-crushed at source. In this process, the concrete and the reinforcement are separated. This considerably reduces the transport volume, saving dumping and transportation expenses.

New, improved MP-series Multi-Processors
Caterpillar’s Multi-Processors series enables you to handle virtually any demolition and reduction job simply by using the basic housing and a choice of six available jaw sets. These demolition shears are compact and light in construction, yet incredibly strong. By mounting the housing to the excavator arm you can achieve maximum reach; you don’t even have to disassemble the stick. The housing’s strong rotator provides a continuous 360° rotation which, in combination with the bucket cylinder, allows you to carry out your demolition job quickly and precisely from any angle.

New D- series bucket line for the 374D
Caterpillar Work Tools introduces a new line of buckets for the 374D Hydraulic Excavator. This new line of pin-on and coupler buckets feature improved designs to take full advantage of increased machine power and assure the bucket performs in tandem with the machine.

New Center-Lock™ Pin Grabber coupler

The new coupler’s triple-lock design promotes jobsite safety and allows operators to quickly, simply and confidently engages and disengages work tools regardless of boom and stick position.

P300 series Hydraulic Rotating Concrete Crusher
The hydraulic concrete crusher has taken modern demolition technology a step further. Because this equipment substantially limits the amount of vibration and noise it is well suited for concrete demolition in residential areas. The hydraulic concrete crusher combines several concrete demolition operations in one piece of equipment:

- breaking out concrete from fixed structures
- pulverizing concrete
- cutting reinforcement rods and small steel profiles

G325B Demolition grapple
The G325D demolition grapple for 28 - 35 ton hydraulic excavators means considerable savings in terms of transportation and dumping costs as well as manpower, as you can now sort out demolition debris at source and transport it separately to recycling plants. It is very much suited to “strip” a building or structure before final demolition. In times of increasing environmental regulations, it is an indispensable attachment for demolition and recycling companies.

GSH Orange Peel grapple
Caterpillar’s scrap-metal multi-blade grapples are designed to provide maximum productivity for almost every application. Caterpillar has incorporated many well-thought out details in this series that make these grapples stronger and more dependable than ever. Each grapple is manufactured from durable and wear-resistant materials, and is standard equipped with a hydraulic rotator. The GSH series is specially designed for excavators of between 15 and 50 tons, and for Material handling (MH) machines between 20 and 60 tons.

Hammers
Caterpillar is pleased to show a number of hammers at Bauma. The H140Ds hammer will be located in the quarry area. A cut away H55Ds hammer and a hammer pyramid that includes the H35Ds, H45Ds, H55Ds and H65Ds will be located in the work tools area. All Cat hammers have sealed accumulators that do not require constant recharging, thus increasing uptime and delivering high performance blow after blow after blow.

Fusion™ Wheel loader coupler
The Cat Fusion Wheel Loader Coupler System pulls the coupler and work tool closer to the wheel loader for machine performance comparable to pin-on-with all the versatility and flexibility of a coupler. The patented design moves the center of gravity closer to the machine, yet the coupler enables the loader to conveniently pick up and use a wide range of work tools.

Rip & Load package
Caterpillar offers a unique Rip and Load arrangement for hydraulic excavators working in quarries, mines and heavy construction projects. Quick couplers, Ripper tines and Rock buckets that are fully compatible with the Cat excavator range will deliver excellent ripping and loading performance. Ripper-to-bucket changes are made hydraulically in less than 35 seconds. This gives the operator complete flexibility to continually adjust ripping, sorting and loading work.
The TR-70 ripper is located in the Quarry area.

Besides these products there will be many work tools attached to the machines like clamshell buckets, several quick couplers and buckets among others on show.

Caterpillar® and Demlone Take Demolition To New Heights with DEM50

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

The Caterpillar stand at bauma 2010 features a new DEM50 ultra high demolition (UHD) machine manufactured by Demlone. The DEM50 offers a flexible working height of 18, 21 or 23 meters and can carry a work tool weighing up to 3,000 kilograms throughout most of the working range. This means improved performance and versatility for demolition contractors compared to previous models available from Caterpillar dealers.

The DEM 50 is the first machine resulting from a close cooperation between Caterpillar and Demlone, a subsidiary of a French demolition equipment specialist Vensys Group. Built on the Caterpillar 336D L demolition duty hydraulic excavator, Demlone manufactures the front-end structures and assembles the completed machine.

Increased performance
Utilising the undercarriage of the robust Cat® 336D with purpose-built, strengthened heavy-duty upper frames, the DEM50 offers working heights of 18, 21 and 23 meters, from a modular boom and stick system. Its demolition equipment is made up of a main boom section, 3-meter and 5-meter boom extensions and a single stick, allowing contractors to rapidly change between the three different working heights.

The machine is equipped with a hydraulic boom foot quick coupler, with the lower pins being controlled hydraulically from the cab. All of the hydraulic hoses between the boom foot and the main boom structure are equipped with quick disconnects, so that the boom configuration can be changed in 20 minutes, far less than the 3-4 hours of previous machines.

A standard reach backhoe boom can also be supplied as an option, using the same rapid-fit pin system. This provides increased productivity for the customer, as the machine can complete a wider number of tasks on the demolition job site.

Through the use of Weldox 700 high elastic limit steels in the construction of the front-end equipment combined with a heavy-duty counterweight, the DEM50 has been designed to work with work tools weighing up to 3,000 kilograms. A wide range of Cat work tools, including multiprocessors, demolition and sorting grapples, demolition shears and buckets, is available.

The Caterpillar Tool Control System allows the operator to programme up to 10 hydraulic output settings for the auxiliary circuits. This reduces the time required to change between work tools, as the machine can be preset to work with dedicated breakers, pulverisers and other tools.

Stability and safety
The DEM50 is equipped with Demlone’s Range Monitoring System (RMS) that incorporates sensors on each boom section, on the machine’s upper structure and on the track frame. These sensors transmit information to a central control unit, recording the machine’s working position, any slope on which it is operating, extension of the boom and the track position if equipped with variable gauge tracks.

Through a touch screen display in the cab, the RMS system informs the operator of the machine’s positioning and capacities. If the machine is operated outside the safe working envelope, the system generates an alarm.

Contractors can choose between Cat 336D L long and wide undercarriage or a hydraulic variable gauge (HVG) undercarriage, which provides increased over-the-side stability. The HVG track system allows a change from the transport width of 2,390mm to full working width of 2,820mm (with 600mm shoes) in less than a minute.

The DEM50 can be equipped with a full auto-lubrication system with a programmable grease pump. The routing of the lubrication lines has been designed to increase impact resistance through grooved welded plates.

The tool and bucket cylinders in the front-end have a robust sliding guard to provide protection to the cylinder rod. A dust suppression system at the boom tip is available as an option, improving the visibility for the operator and reducing the impact on the working environment for the customer.

Total control
The Cat D Series cab offers high levels of comfort and visibility. The cab tilts hydraulically by up to 30 degrees, to provide the operator with increased visibility when working at full height, yet is no higher than a standard machine for transportation.

A Demlone compressor mounted in the rear of the upper structure provides high pressure air to a series of nozzles located on the exterior of the protection structure, above the cab. These nozzles can be used to blow dust and debris from the cab top glass, maintaining visibility during operation.

The machine’s high resolution display screen is utilised by rear mounted camera systems, and an optional demolition stick camera is available to provide a close-up view of the working area.

Transport ease
Weighing in at 45-48 tonnes, depending on configuration, the DEM50 has a maximum shipping length of 17,470mm. Optional UHD and extension cradles are available to provide secure storage and ease of transportation for the various boom elements. All of the boom sections are equipped with lifting eyes and the optional transport cradle has walkways built-in to make it easy for the operator to position the sections.

Close cooperation
Caterpillar and Demlone work in close cooperation for a full line of ultra high reach demolition equipment, commencing with the DEM50 and the larger DEM70, which offers 26m, 29m and 31m working heights that are both available for order at Bauma. A third machine, the DEM100, will be introduced later in 2010.

Caterpillar has decided to work with Demlone in the demolition sector due to Demlone’s extensive market knowledge, engineering, manufacturing and customisation capabilities. By working together, Caterpillar and Demlone can provide dealers and customers with improved product flexibility, availability and performance. Sales and service support is provided by the Caterpillar dealer network.

More Powerful Cat® 336E Meets Stage IIIB/Tier-4-Interim Emissions Standards and Delivers Enhanced Productivity, Reliability and Durability

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

The new Cat® 336E hydraulic excavator is among the first Caterpillar machines to meet European Stage IIIB and Environment Protection Agency Tier 4 Interim emissions standards. The 336E, which replaces the 336D, features a more-powerful engine for increased digging and lifting performance, an enhanced operator environment, serviceability improvements and new styling. With more than 9,000 test hours to its credit, the 336E is designed to deliver exceptional productivity, reliability and uptime. Coupled with the strength of the worldwide Cat dealer network, the 336E provides uncommon value for the customer.

In addition to meeting Stage IIIB/Tier 4 Interim emissions requirements, the 336E also meets all applicable sound-level and safety regulations, including the ISO (International Standards Organization) requirements for visibility. The 336E is fitted with new mirrors and has provision for an integrated rear-view camera.

Productivity gains
With a net power rating of 236 kW (317 hp), the 336E’s Cat C9 engine delivers 18 percent more power than does its 336D predecessor. The C9 engine features advanced electronic control, precise fuel delivery and refined air management for optimum performance and reduced fuel consumption. Increased power results in faster digging and loading cycles for added production, while the overall design of the new 336E assures outstanding fuel-efficiency (material moved per gallon/liter of fuel).

Increased hydraulic pressure in the 336E’s heavy-lift system, coupled with features that promote greater machine stability, yields increased lifting capacity-allowing the 336E to work more productively in pipe-handling operations.

To accommodate the 336E’s increased lifting capacity, the boom, digging arm and boom-foot mount have been strengthened to assure durability. The swing frame also has been strengthened to support the machine’s redesigned ROPS (Roll Over Protection Structure).

Boom and digging-arm options allow the 336E to be configured for optimum performance in a range of applications, including those involving mass excavation and hydraulic-breaker operation. A new hydraulic main-control valve and an integrated electric regeneration valve in the boom circuit (for capturing and recycling unused energy) also contribute to significant fuel savings. In addition, the new machine is Cat AccuGrade™ Ready, facilitating installation of 2D and 3D grade-control systems for increased productivity and further fuel savings.

Operator amenities and serviceability
A new monitor in the cab is 40 percent larger and provides significantly enhanced resolution. The monitor, which features quick-access buttons that complement a new screen layout, also can display up to three rear-view-camera images.

For the operator’s further convenience, height of the joystick consoles is now adjustable, and the seat cushion is wider. An optional air-cooled seat improves operator comfort in warm weather, and a new air-conditioner compressor improves cab cooling. The 336E’s cab is quieter, reducing operator fatigue and allowing the operator to work more productively. A new radio has an auxiliary input for devices such as MP3 players.

To simplify routine maintenance, the 336E uses a side-by-side cooling package (radiator/oil cooler/charge-air cooler) that eliminates previously stacked cooling modules. The new cooling package is readily accessible via the 336E’s one-piece engine hood and is easy to clean. Also, optional remote engine-oil and hydraulic-oil drains facilitate environmentally friendly service, and the 336E’s redesigned air-conditioning system is easier to maintain. For greater safety, time-delay working lights remain on longer for entering and exiting the cab at night.

Complementing the overall design of the 336E are styling changes, including new sheet metal, new paint scheme for the cab, Cat logo recessed into the counterweight and model designations repositioned to panels just behind the cab. New sheet metal includes a new, layered-construction door that is lighter in weight but exceptionally durable.

Cat® 988H Update Delivers More Value for Customers Through Improved Systems, Lower Costs and Operator Well-Being

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

The Cat® 988 Wheel Loader has worked in global quarry, mining, industrial and construction applications since 1963, and the present 988H field population numbers nearly 4,000 units. Included in that tally are 600-plus machines with more than 20,000 hours, and more than 150 machines exceeding 30,000 hours-proof of the 988H’s strength in design.

Building on this 988 legacy, Caterpillar has now introduced an updated 988H, which blends the best of its predecessor’s qualities with up to 10 percent greater fuel-efficiency and new features that boost production, lower costs, enhance the operator’s environment and further advance the 988’s legendary durability and reliability. The refined design of the latest 988H, combined with the strength of the Cat dealer network, provides uncommon value for the customer.

Updates
Included in the updated 988H package is the new Positive Flow Control (PFC) implement hydraulic system, designed to boost loading performance and save fuel. Complementing the PFC system are redesigned buckets, which load easier and increase fill factors, plus loader-linkage changes that add breakout power.

Modifications in the braking system improve retarding capabilities and extend brake life, while new fuel-management features increase fuel-saving potential. To further refine loading efficiency, the optional Payload Control System has increased accuracy, is more robust in design and easier to calibrate.

For the operator’s comfort, convenience and safety, cab sound levels are significantly reduced and a new electro-hydraulic implement pod reduces operator effort and fatigue. Hinged mirrors allow safer access for windshield cleaning, and an optional heated seat and new radio options (Bluetooth, Auxiliary, MP3 and Satellite) mean greater operator comfort.

Loading power and fuel-efficiency
The Positive Flow Control hydraulic system uses a new electronically managed, variable-displacement pump that works with an integrated solenoid valve with force feedback to precisely manage oil flow. The PFC system assures that pump displacement is always precisely matched to loading conditions. The system regulates oil flow in proportion to lever stroke, improving hydraulic response and creating an overall hydraulic efficiency that results in less heat and decreased fuel use.

A 5,000-psi (34 500-kPa) pressure boost in the boom-lift circuit increases bucket-breakout force, and a regeneration valve on the linkage assures positive cylinder response. The 988H update also offers a new Performance Series bucket line that retains material more effectively and provides increased fill factors (volume loaded, versus rated capacity). The buckets have a wider throat, longer floor and improved setback angle.

The 988H update highlights three programmable fuel-saving features: the Fuel Management System (FMS); Auto Idle Kickdown (AIK); and Idle Shutdown.

The FMS, which has been standard on the 988H since June 2007, allows customers to set machine parameters to match production demands. This is accomplished through three modes of operation-Full Power mode (FMS not engaged), Balanced mode and Maximum Fuel Saving mode. By choosing either the Balanced or Maximum Fuel Saving mode, the operator can set the machine to automatically reduce engine speed and hydraulic flow when the 988H is outside its dig segment, adding to potential fuel savings by up to 15 percent.

New for the 988H update is the AIK feature. If the 988H is not being actively operated for a period of time, the AIK system will temporarily reduce engine speed to save fuel. The system automatically resumes engine speed to the previous setting when the operator engages the implement control pod or the F-N-R switch or the STIC Steer. The Idle Shutdown feature, also new for the 988H update, automatically shuts down the engine after the machine has been in a safe idling state for an extended time. The operator receives an in-cab audible/visual warning before the engine shuts down.

The optional Payload Control System (PCS) 3.0 is a new on-the-go weighing system that helps the 988H operator fill each truck with an accurate payload-typically to within ± 1 percent. The new system requires calibration only once per year and provides a simpler interface and an intuitive graphic display. PCS 3.0 can record details-material, date, time, number of passes and ticket number-for up to 1,000 truckloads and can identify up to 50 trucks.

Safety and operator amenities
In the cab of the new 988H, laminated glass is used in the rear window and both rear side windows. The laminated windows have two panes of glass separated by an air gap, which dampens window vibration caused by external noise sources, such as the engine and hydraulic pumps. The new windows complement a laminated windshield and laminated front side windows to reduce interior sound levels by a significant 1 dB(A), to 72 dB(A).

Loader controls for the 988H update are positioned in a new, low-effort, electro-hydraulic implement pod that features fingertip levers that improve both control and ergonomics for the operator. The new control levers also use “soft detents,” which replace conventional detent magnets with electronic sensors that provide easier lever control.

New operator-environment features build on traditional 988 safety features, including superior visibility (large glass areas, long-life LED lights, and optional rear-view camera); access and egress precautions (lighted primary/secondary stairwells, full-perimeter railings); maintenance provisions (ground-level/platform access, electrical-disconnect switch); and operator comfort and well-being (adjustable controls, air conditioning, optional ride-control, secondary steering system).

Solid foundations
The 988H update retains all the solid characteristics that have established the 988’s reputation for durable, reliable, efficient performance. The new machine’s massive box-section rear frame and box-shaped loader tower are designed to resist operating forces, and both use castings in critical areas of high stress. The distinctive fabricated box-boom has more torsional stiffness than boom arms used in conventional Z-bar linkages, and the boom works smoothly with dual bucket links to provide superior breakout forces and durable performance.

The power train likewise incorporates established 988H technology, including the Cat ACERT™ C18 engine with electronically controlled fuel injection and Next Generation Modular Radiator with 14 parallel-flow circuits for optimum cooling. The field-proven power shift transmission uses the Cat Impeller Clutch Torque Converter and Rimpull Control System to balance hydraulic power with tractive effort, and massive Cat built axles feature planetary-reduction final drives positioned at the wheel ends to reduce axle-shaft torque loads.

As proof of its outstanding ability to assure customer value, the newest 988H, as with its long line of predecessor models, has the design integrity to yield a life of productive service, then can be economically rebuilt to yield exceptionally low lifetime operating costs.

Caterpillar’s Multi-Processors series (MP15, 20, 30 and 40) can handle virtually any demolition and reduction job simply by using the basic housing and a choice of up to six available jaw sets.

“As the industry’s leader in attachments for excavators and wheel loaders, Caterpillar is committed to keeping its products up-to-date”, said David Becktel, Commercial Manager Caterpillar Work Tools. “Contractors and users of demolition equipment are always looking for tools that will help them to operate more effectively and efficiently. With the improved MP series, we not only respond to our customers’ needs; we build on our excellent reputation by introducing what is perhaps the most versatile demolition tool on the market”.

Industry standard
The improved MP series is compact and light in construction, yet incredibly strong in cutting and crushing capability. By mounting the housing to the excavator arm you can achieve maximum reach; you don’t even have to disassemble the stick. The housing’s strong rotator provides a continuous 360° rotation which, in combination with the bucket cylinder, allows you to carry out the demolition job quickly and precisely from any angle. With its large installed base the MP series has been accepted by the industry as most versatile demolition tool on the market. The MP debuted in 1993 and has become an extremely popular demolition tool, selling over 3000 units in Europe only.

Improvements
The Multi-Processor underwent an update to cement its position as the class leading, and most versatile demolition tool in Europe. Although the basic field-proven design has not been touched, the housing alone, features over 20 improvements compared to the former model. For instance the new cover design creates easier access to the inner parts when service is required. A new protection cover is added to the cylinder rod and the lock nut design has been improved. Further, pins, trunnions and bearings are adjusted to facilitate an even more smooth jaw change. Also, parts commonality is designed into the MP to significantly benefit owners of several Caterpillar work tools. Releasing a series of kits to rebuild current and former jaw sets has optimized ease of service. All changes will cater to improved and easier operation that will enhance savings in time and cost.

New S jaw
Besides little changes to the available six jaw sets, the S-jaw is completely new. The new S-jaw is designed to better cut and reduce the size of metal items commonly found at demolition sites. It now features a piercing tip and wear blade in the upper jaw and a cross blade with additional guiding blade in the lower jaw. The straight lower jaw works with the apex of the upper jaw, compressing and flattening the steel before the cut. The straight lower jaw maximizes shear force and creates a more efficient cut.

Interchangeability
The interchangeability of the several jaw sets makes the Multi-Processor a very efficient and an indispensable attachment for demolition and recycling companies.
With the introduction of the improved version it will still be possible to exchange jaw sets of the former models and visa versa.

Highly flexible
Each Multi-Processor can be equipped with a wide selection of interchangeable jaws (CC, CR, PP, S, PS, and TS). With one common housing and properly selected sets of jaws a contractor can achieve exceptional flexibility with minimum investment, and accomplish most tasks encountered on a demolition job. The various jaws can be quickly installed or changed, thanks to well-positioned lifting eyes and adjustable stop-bolts on the jaws and the housing.

Caterpillar Work Tools Offers Equipment Protection Plan for Hydro-Mechanical Work Tools in Europe, Africa, Middle East and CIS

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

Caterpillar Work Tools B.V. is pleased to announce that it has developed an Equipment Protection Plan program for certain Hydro-mechanical work tools sold in Europe, Africa, Middle East and CIS. With this Cat® Equipment Protection Plan customers can extend their service coverage to three years.

“We stand behind the reliability of our work tools. To prove it, we are pleased to offer one of the best product workmanship coverage for Hydro-mechanical work tools in the industry”, said David Becktel, Commercial Manager, Caterpillar Work Tools. “This plan will limit customers’ exposure to costly repairs and provide a way to help enhance resale value.”

Caterpillar secures an investment in work tools with a standard warranty that provides 12 months of worry-free operation, but the lifespan of Cat work tools well exceeds that timeframe. Equipment Protection Plan protects for the long haul and ensures that investments are safeguarded beyond the standard warranty period.

Equipment Protection Plan is available for the following Caterpillar and Verachtert branded products:

  • Hydraulic hammers
  • Multi-processors
  • Demolition and Sorting grapples
  • Orange Peel grapples
  • Hydraulic Pulverizers
  • Hydraulic Crushers

Equipment Protection Plan must be purchased at the time of original work tool purchase. And the unused portion of an extended warranty is transferrable upon sale of the work tool.

Caterpillar® Center-Locktm Pin-Grabber Coupler Features Patented Locking System, Ease of Operation and Flexible Compatibility

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

The Netherlands, April 2010 Caterpillar Work Tools B.V. introduces its new line of Center-Lock Pin-Grabber couplers for Cat® hydraulic excavator models 311 through 345 in the UK, Germany and France. The new Caterpillar Center-Lock Pin-Grabber coupler uses a patented over-center locking mechanism and two hydraulic locking features to assure positive work-tool attachment. The new coupler’s triple-lock design promotes jobsite safety and allows operators to quickly, simply and confidently engages and disengages work tools regardless of boom and stick position. The Center-Lock coupler accommodates the same range of Cat work tools as previous pin-grabber couplers, as well as a broad range of competitive buckets and tools.

When the operator uses the in-cab switch to engage the Center-Lock coupler with a work tool, the coupler’s robust cylinder extends to close the primary hook around the tool’s rear pin. As the cylinder rod continues to exert force on the rear pin, the cylinder housing adjusts its position and forces a combination of three attached parts-center-lock rocker, connector link and secondary lock-to snap into an over-center position (much like closing the handles of locking pliers). This action forces the secondary lock to clamp the forward pin.

Once the coupler locks, the mechanical principles involved in its over-center locking technology assure that any working force applied to the pins will serve only to increase the coupler’s grip. Constant hydraulic force exerted by the cylinder and the action of a counterbalance valve provides additional locking forces, supplementing that of the mechanical lock.

The Center-Lock coupler remains positively closed until the operator takes the deliberate action of activating the in-cab switch and extending the bucket cylinder.

The over-center mechanism then releases (as when opening the handles of locking pliers). For the operator’s convenience and for jobsite safety, the secondary lock is distinctly visible from the cab and provides an unmistakable indicator of the coupler’s status-whether locked or unlocked.

“Because the new Center-Lock coupler eliminates the blocking bar and spring pack required with conventional pin-grabber designs, the operator no longer needs to completely curl the boom and stick (thus inverting the coupler) when engaging a work tool” said David Becktel, Commercial Manager, Caterpillar Work Tools B.V. “The Center-Lock design requires only that the bucket cylinder be extended to activate locking and unlocking functions, whereas this action is independent of boom and stick position. The resulting advantage is that the operator can engage and disengage tools with the boom and stick at full extension, a valuable feature when changing tools in low-overhead situations, such as near power lines”.

Maintaining the new Center-Lock coupler requires only daily greasing. To promote trouble-free operation, jumper-line routing helps avoid pinching or snagging on jobsite hazards.
